Clyro Court, April 2009

Intro by Mike Cuff

As usual J33P started the year with a visit to Clyro Court, a site that consists of two offroading areas split by a B road, the sites offering many different types of terrain including the famous rocky riverbed, a feature that attendees are always eager to drive up and down. As in previous years attendees had the options of doing punches, driving up and down the river and exploring the sites. The punches were set up so that there was something that everybody could tackle/find fun – some were drivable – some were absolute horrors! Time to come clean, a couple of weeks before the event was due to run, I had an email from Stefan Pracht asking if he could bring along his new truck (tubular framed buggy with 44” boggers) for a shakedown before heading off to Croatia, of cause I said yes and offered to set out a few punches that he and his co-driver Dan Fabb would find interesting! To their credit, they achieved every punch demonstrating consummate skill and expertise. Off course, just because the punches were horrendous, it did not stop some of the smaller tyred vehicles having ago at some of them – well done guys.

Rather than writing a long event report myself, I'll leave it to Andy Dawkins (see the Land Rover 90 pictures) write up, the event photo's and the movie tell the story of the event. However before letting Andy take over, I’d like to end with thanking long time club member Ceri Taylor for organising and running the event – all I had to do was set out a few punches. Going by the feedback I received Ceri did a great job – his efforts being very much appreciated by both the attendees and the club.

Andrew Dawkins event...

We had an awesome day out - as usual with j33p, the event was well organised with a friendly welcome and some well set out and tricky punches to get. It was the second year we had attended the Clyro Court J33P event and it's always good fun. We started off in the top woods looking for some punches to get and within 5 minutes I'd already managed to smash my number plate and reversing lights trying to turn around – I’m sure those trees move when you’re not looking!! We set out on getting our first punch which involved a bonnet deep muddy pool with a short winch out up the bank to get the punch. Punch gained and we had attracted a few other Jeepers looking to see just how deep the water was before having a go themselves. We then moved on and got a few more punches with Dave getting seriously cross axled on one of the one way sections requiring some interesting winching to get himself back out. We did a couple more punches in the top woods then before making a quick trip into Hay on Wye for lunch from the fish and chip shop.

After driving down the river the previous year I was keen to have another go at it. Unfortunately we managed to blow a diff on one of the punches in the lower woods in the afternoon so we didn’t get around to it. Never mind though we'll do it next year! A Big Thank You to all the organisers for sorting it all out and for setting up all the punches – can’t wait for the next Clyro event now!
